The preparation guidelines for bonded, all ceramic crowns are slightly different from traditional crown preparations. The traditional PFM prep with margins extending subgingivally for both esthetics and retention form is no longer necessary. If a patient has gingival recession and some asymptomatic root exposure, it is not necessary to cover these areas. What is the purpose of grinding on cementum only to cover it? Leave those margins “high and dry”. Your periodontist will thank you.
